How to convert Tamil audio to text

1. Choose the Tamil audio or video file. Tamil and Accurate mode are already selected.
2. Leave Translate to English off for Tamil text, or tick it for English.
3. Wait for the lines to appear, then read them through.
4. Copy the text or download it as TXT, SRT or VTT.

How well it understands Tamil

The Whisper model was trained on far more English than Tamil, so expect more mistakes than with English: unusual names, place names and fast speech are the usual trouble spots. Clear speech recorded close to the microphone gives the best results, and Accurate mode is noticeably better than Quick for Tamil.

Tanglish (Tamil with English) is common in everyday conversation. The model may write the English words in Tamil script or switch scripts mid-sentence. If you need a clean document, the English translation is often easier to edit.

Frequently asked questions

Is my recording uploaded to a server?

No. The speech model is downloaded to your browser once and the audio is transcribed on your own phone or computer. The file never leaves your device.

Why is the first transcription slower?

The first time, your browser downloads the speech model (about 40 MB for Quick, 80 MB for Balanced, 250 MB for Accurate). After that it is cached and starts in seconds, even offline.

How long can the recording be?

There is no fixed limit. An hour-long lecture works on most laptops; on a phone, recordings under about 30 minutes are more comfortable. Lines appear while it works, so you can stop at any point and keep what is done.

Which script does the Tamil transcript use?

Tamil script, the standard way Tamil is written. Tick Translate to English if you want the text in English instead.

Can I get Tamil in Roman (English) letters?

Not directly. The model writes Tamil in Tamil script or translates it to English; it does not transliterate.
