Video to text transcript

Choose a video and the sound is transcribed on your device. Use the transcript for notes, captions, blog posts or searching inside long recordings.

How to convert a video to text

  1. Choose a video file from your phone or computer (MP4, MOV, WEBM or MKV).
  2. The sound track is read from the video inside your browser; the picture is ignored.
  3. Pick the language and mode, then wait for the transcript to fill in.
  4. Download plain text for notes, or SRT/VTT if you want captions.

What a video transcript is good for

A transcript makes a long video searchable: press Ctrl+F to find the minute where a topic comes up. Creators turn transcripts into blog posts, show notes and social captions, and students turn recorded classes into revision notes.

If you only need captions for the video itself, the subtitle generator gives you the same lines with exact timings.

Large video files

Videos are big because of the picture, not the sound. Your browser has to read the whole file, so a long 4K video can be slow on a phone. If that happens, transcribe on a laptop or export just the audio from your editor first.

Frequently asked questions

Is my recording uploaded to a server?

No. The speech model is downloaded to your browser once and the audio is transcribed on your own phone or computer. The file never leaves your device.

Why is the first transcription slower?

The first time, your browser downloads the speech model (about 40 MB for Quick, 80 MB for Balanced, 250 MB for Accurate). After that it is cached and starts in seconds, even offline.

How long can the recording be?

There is no fixed limit. An hour-long lecture works on most laptops; on a phone, recordings under about 30 minutes are more comfortable. Lines appear while it works, so you can stop at any point and keep what is done.

Does it work with YouTube or Instagram links?

No, it needs the video file itself. Use a video you recorded or have the rights to, saved on your phone or computer.

Can I make subtitles from the video?

Yes. Switch the format to SRT or VTT before downloading, or use the subtitle generator page.
