How accurate is this traffic estimate?

It is a rough range. Only the site owner (through tools like Google Analytics) knows real visitor numbers. We turn a site's public popularity rank into a range, which is usually right within a few times up or down.

Where does the data come from?

From the Tranco list, a research ranking of the top one million websites built from several traffic sources, and, when configured, Google's Chrome UX Report, which shows whether a site has enough Chrome visitors to be measured.

Why does my site show 'not in the top 1 million'?

Most websites are not in the top one million. That usually means fewer than about 20,000 visits a month. Check your own numbers in Google Analytics or Search Console.
